Resilience of Iranian Ports and Maritime Transport in National Defense

Captain Hamzeh Keshavarz, former CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Group Company

Western and European countries realized the strategic importance of shipping after World War I and since 1920 have taken effective measures to encourage investment in this sector by implementing incentive policies such as tax exemption, the spread of flags of convenience, and the relaxation of labor and labor laws for shipping and shipbuilding.

Such models can be used as a model to encourage investment in the shipping and shipbuilding sector and strengthen the country’s national fleet.

Iran enjoys unparalleled logistical advantages in terms of its geographical location and access to open waters. In 2010, before the sanctions began, the country had an extensive international transportation network and was active on routes to Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean. More than half of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s shipping revenue came from international and cross-trade shipping.
