Makran Coast and Chabahar: Industrial and Rail Development to Prevent Iran Becoming a Logistics Island

Mr. Mohammad Aghirlou, Secretary of the Federation of Transport and Logistics

A logistics-based economy means earning money from the flow of goods instead of just selling natural resources. Iran is lagging behind in this area. We are still seeking to receive the right of way, while the modern logistics economy is based on value-added services such as packaging, assembly, smart warehousing, and capillary distribution. We only play the role of a gateway, not an intermediate destination.

Competitors are capturing Iran’s traditional customers; the Lapis Lazuli Corridor and the Middle Corridor virtually bypass Iran. Looking at transportation is still a cost, not an investment. The share of logistics in Iran’s GDP does not match its potential capacity, leading to missed strategic opportunities.
