Transit as Iran’s Only Maritime Driver
Mr. Masoud Daneshmand, Shipping Activist

In the shipbuilding sector, despite having shipyards and specialized manpower, there are serious limitations. It is not possible to purchase raw materials such as steel, engines, and required equipment, and even if these items are provided and the ship is built, the final product faces problems selling.
Because Iranian-made ships are not allowed to enter the ports of many countries in the world due to sanctions. As a result, the possibility of developing shipbuilding has actually faced a major obstacle due to sanctions.
Similar conditions prevail in the field of ship repairs. Ships must visit domestic sites for repairs, but after repairs are completed, the location and company details of the repairer are recorded in the ship’s identity document. Given the embargo on Iranian ports, this has led many countries to deny entry to ships that have been repaired in Iran; therefore, ship owners are reluctant to visit Iranian ports for repairs.
