Sustainable Grain Market Development Discussed at IranGrain Conference

At the opening of the IranGrain Conference, Executive Director Sharif Nezam Mafi emphasized that corn, oil, and wheat are the three main pillars of every country’s food security, and Iran is no exception. He noted that bread still constitutes a major portion of the Iranian diet, with more than half of the nation’s calorie intake supplied through grains.

Therefore, any disruption in the production, supply, or import of these key commodities poses a direct threat to Iran’s food security.

Nezam Mafi also highlighted that grains are not only vital for nutrition but also form a core foundation of Iran’s national economy. Reviewing the country’s history over the past two centuries, he recalled several crises—such as the devastating famines during the Qajar era and both World Wars—that stemmed from grain shortages.

He concluded that the IranGrain Conference aims to foster dialogue and share practical solutions for the sustainable grain market development in Iran. The ultimate goal, he said, is to shape the future of the grain industry and strengthen national food security through active participation of grain industry professionals and key stakeholders.
