Iran’s Missed Opportunities in the Eurasian Economic Union

China has been implementing the “One Belt, One Road” project for years. After the outbreak of the Ukraine war, its southern route from China to Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia became more active and now provides direct access to Europe. Kazakhstan is the biggest beneficiary of this route, while Russia is practically left out.

We hope that in the new One Belt One Road route that enters Afghanistan from China, Iran, in addition to Pakistan, will also make proper use of the mentioned route.

More than 70 percent of the Caspian Sea fleet is in the possession of Azerbaijan

China has also developed a new route from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan. Although Azerbaijan is not a member of the Eurasian Union, it plays an important role in the transit route of the region, with more than 70 percent of the Caspian Sea fleet. This shows that China is becoming a major player in the Eurasian transit routes.
