The need for 6 billion dollars of foreign exchange per year
Ms. Fariba Maghsoudi, Executive & Commercial Vice President of Iran Grains Union

The amount of grain needed in the country is about 13 million tons of wheat, 6 million tons of barley, 9 million tons of corn, and 2.5 million tons of soybeans. The amount of domestic production of these inputs in barley is more than 50%, in corn, soybeans and soybean meal, less than 10% of the country’s needs are provided, and the rest of the needs are provided by imports.
Meanwhile, the increase in production in the field of eggs, chicken meat and other livestock products depends on the timely and sufficient supply of the required production inputs. In fact, the distribution of inputs and the need to continue without interruption the process of purchase, supply and import is so serious that we have to think about the necessary arrangements with timely planning and proper distribution among production units to prevent shortages.
Today, wheat is the only staple food in many low- and middle-income countries, and politicians have accepted that the key role of wheat in social cohesion is undeniable, and wheat has proven that it can be a geopolitical driver and a combination of supply chain disruptions, international crises, and global warming. The intersection with geopolitics and the global wheat production plan has highlighted the central role of this product. Therefore, the price of wheat is expected to increase due to geopolitical tensions and adverse weather conditions that affect major wheat producing areas.
On the other hand, the freeze in Europe, the drought in North America and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have reduced global wheat stocks and disrupted the supply chain, which is likely to exacerbate inflation, especially in the United States. The complexity of conflicts and unpredictable weather pose significant challenges to global food security and economic stability.
