The flood in damaged the wheat farms

  • Seyed Habib Shafiee, PhD in International Relations: The FATF in Iran has faced different groups who either approve it or disagree with it. According to those who disagree, FATF would give detailed information about the financial and economical situation of the country to other countries. They believe that FATF is due to the inactivity of the decision makers and is an introduction to the self-sanctions that the country is inflicting on itself.
  • Shafagh, Mac Makaron: From the 12 million MT of wheat consumed in Iran, 1.5 to 2 million tons of it is used for making pasta and other flour based goods while the rest is used for making bread. The self-sufficiency in the field of wheat has pros and cons, it would lessen the dependency on othe countries while degrades the quality of the finished products.
  • Sadeghian, CEO of ArdDaran: Flood and wheat trafficking in the recent months has caused worries regarding the shortage of wheat in the country in the current year. It seems that the government should start planning the imports in order to avoid the shortage.
  • Jalal Mohamoodzadeh, Member of the Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Committee in the Islamic Consultative Assembly: Because of the devastating floods in March and April, about 1.5 million tons of wheat has been destroyed, however, because of the enough rainfall in some provinces, we expect that the production would be much better that the previous years in those parts of the country.
  • Esmail Esfandiyaripour: Although the flood in some cities damaged the wheat farms, the rainfall in other cities has increased the production and quality of the wheat. In total, the flood damaged 5 to 6 percent of the whole wheat production of the country.
  • Arsalan Ghassemi, Head of Agriculture Committee in Iran’s Chamber of Cooperative: In the table for the export tariffs, sweets and biscuit producers have to pay 30% tariff and 1 USD per each Kg of the exported good. For pasta, the tariff is 30% and 0.53 USD per each Kg.
  • Parviz Jahangiri, member of Additives Association of Iran: Different food producers in the world get permits for their products according to suitability of that product and the health factors of the society, there is no necessity in getting permits for all the same product over and over again, this would make the producers to feel independent and obliged to change the same formulation while putting a lot of money and time.
  • Hossein Mahmoodi, Lecturer in Environmental Studies Institute of Shahid Beheshti University: Using GMO seeds is a dependency to other countries because these seeds should only be used once and we have to buy them from international companies. This would have negative impact on the local seed developers.
  • Boroomand, CEO of Artin Shimi: Acrylamide is a substance that is known for causing cancer. Acrylamide is produced while the carbohydrates are heated in a way that the finished product has a crispy texture to it. According to the latest research, the amount of acrylamide is very high in grain and potatoe products that are baked and cooked in over 120 degrees centigrade.
