Chabahar: Iran’s Indian Ocean Gateway for Food Security and Supply Chain Resilience

With its direct access to the Indian Ocean and no dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, Chabahar Port is emerging as one of Iran’s most strategic gateways for diversifying essential commodity import routes and strengthening supply chain resilience.

Capable of accommodating large ocean-going vessels, the port offers significant capacity for handling grain and other bulk commodities while reducing maritime transportation costs and providing a more secure alternative during periods of regional instability.

Located on the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and connected to trade routes linking India with Central Asia, Chabahar is well positioned to become a key logistics hub for regional commerce. Realizing this potential, however, requires further investment in rail connectivity to Iran’s national network, expanded grain silos and specialized storage facilities, modern bulk cargo handling equipment, and integrated logistics services. Strengthening rail transport is particularly important, as it enables high-volume grain shipments at lower cost, improves delivery reliability, and reduces dependence on road freight.

With targeted investment in port infrastructure, rail links, storage capacity, and logistics services, Chabahar has the potential to become a major regional logistics hub and one of Iran’s primary gateways for essential commodity imports. Such development would not only reduce import costs and improve supply chain efficiency but also enhance food security, expand regional trade connectivity, and increase the country’s resilience to geopolitical and trade disruptions.
