Iran’s Transit Challenges: The Zangezur Corridor and Economic Threats

Ms. Seyedeh Fatemeh Moghimi, Member of the Board of Representatives of the Iranian Chamber

Iran has lost valuable transit opportunities for various reasons, including a lack of proper planning and management. The disruption of vital connections from Georgia to Russia and the failure to develop key transit routes such as the North-South Corridor have left Iran out of the loop on the most important transit routes.

Given the current situation, Iran should immediately activate alternative transit routes. The development of the North-South Corridor, the Chabahar-Baku route, as well as expanding cooperation with Armenia, Georgia, and Russia can create new opportunities for cargo transportation. In addition, increasing the capacity of the country’s ports can act as a complement to transit transportation and prevent Iran from losing its share in regional markets.
