The 18,000-ton paradox in the coffee trade

Mr. Mahjourian, Member of the Coffee Association

According to the “Abstraction Law”, the Ministry of Agriculture-Jihad is responsible for importing and estimating the country’s need for agricultural products.

However, coffee market activists are critical of the way the order registration quota is determined.

For example, last year, 53,000 tons of order registration was made, but it is not clear on what basis this number was determined. This year, it has been announced that 35,000 tons of order registration will be allocated, while coffee consumption in the country is on the rise.

The creation of a negative balance of 18,000 tons in this area requires a clear explanation. Why was a license to register an order for 53,000 tons last year based on the country’s needs, but this year this figure has been reduced to 35,000 tons and no clear estimate has been provided? If the country’s population is considered to be 90 million, the import of 40,000 tons would mean a per capita consumption of about 400 grams per person; a figure that is not consistent with the growing trend of coffee consumption in the country.
