Foreign investment with 25.3%

Economic and International Deputy of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives:

  • Rouhani, President of The Islamic Republic of Iran: In the past few years, millions of tons of wheat have been imported to Iran, however, we have achieved the self-sufficiency in the recent years and are now working towards improving and mechanizing farms throughout Iran in order to stabilize that self-sufficiency. There have been some steps for self-sufficiency and reduction of imports in rice, sugar and oilseeds which needs more time in order to be achieved.
  • Mohammad Ali Zeighami, Economic and International Deputy of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives: Foreign investment with 25.3%, has the highest percentage in the sixth economic, social and cultural development plan in order to get to 8% growth in the economy. However, in 2018, the foreign investment in Iran has only been 3.5 billion dollars which in comparison with 1300 billion dollars in the world, is not an eye-catching amount.
  • Khalili, Chairman of the Board at Feed Importers’ Union of Iran: 21% of the Iranians’ diet is consists of grains, on the other hand, 16.5% of the export of Iran is related to grains, therefore, farming, importing and processing grains has a crucial role in the country’s economy. Grain imports in Iran has always been in directs connection with the climate and the government’s policies in providing seed, supporting farmers and the price of the purchase of grains from the farmers. The grain imports in 2009 was 6.25 million tons, while in 2019 it reached to 13.28 million tons. On average, Iran has imported 8 million tons of grains each year in the last decade from which 49% was corn and 25% wheat.
  • Hojjat Baratali, Head of Sales and Distribution Office in GTC: One of the current policies of the government is providing the material and ingredients for the private sector for producing flour based products. Therefore, contract farming for harvesting specified grains for specific purposes is focused on right now and talks have been made with the private sector and the farmers facilitated by the government.

It is important that well stablished companies with a good financial background be the main players in order not to lose time and energy with small companies that are not familiar with international laws and the export and import procedure.
