Iran’s Grain Supply Chain under Pressure; from Declining Trade Credit to Rising Import Costs

Ms. Soheila Alizadeh, Chairwoman of Behin Tejarat Rastak Company

Global trade disruptions, financial constraints and increasing logistics risks have placed Iran’s grain supply chain under growing pressure. In the current environment, securing imports is no longer only a matter of commodity availability; access to international credit, transportation costs, insurance and working capital have become critical factors determining supply stability.

One of the major challenges is the declining access of Iranian importers to credit facilities offered by major international grain traders. Restrictions on cooperation with leading suppliers have pushed companies toward second- and third-tier intermediaries, potentially adding 5–10% to procurement costs while making quality control more difficult.

At the same time, geopolitical risks and limited risk-management tools have reduced importers’ ability to absorb fluctuations in global grain prices, exchange rates and shipping costs. The prolonged lock-up of working capital has further increased financial pressure on companies and raised replacement costs.

The shift of part of Iran’s grain imports from southern ports to northern routes has helped diversify supply channels, but it has also increased logistics complexity and costs, including transportation, unloading, storage and operational coordination. Port infrastructure limitations, aging handling equipment and heavy reliance on road transport remain key challenges affecting the final cost of essential commodities.

Strengthening the commercial credibility of Iranian importers, improving access to financing and foreign currency, upgrading port and rail infrastructure, and developing trade risk-management mechanisms have been identified as essential steps to improve the resilience of Iran’s food supply chain amid growing global uncertainties.
