Iran’s Agriculture: A $100 Billion Potential Held Back by Export Barriers

Mr. Ahmad Haghpour, Senior Advisor to Iran’s Chamber of Agricultural and Natural Resources Guilds

Despite its significant production capacity and potential to generate substantial foreign exchange revenues, Iran’s agricultural sector continues to face structural barriers preventing it from achieving a stronger presence in global markets. These challenges include the lack of an integrated export system, insufficient standardization infrastructure, management instability and weaknesses across the supply chain.

Recent restrictions on some trade and financial channels have highlighted the vulnerability of Iran’s foreign trade; however, the core challenges facing agricultural exports go beyond external relations. Lack of structured mechanisms for quality control, packaging, branding, export standards and consistent supply has limited the ability to build long-term confidence among international buyers.

One of the sector’s major missing links is the establishment of specialized export terminals for agricultural products. Such infrastructure could help organize the collection, sorting, packaging, standardization and global distribution of products such as saffron, fruits and other agricultural commodities.

The experience of countries such as Turkey demonstrates that export success depends not only on producing high-quality products, but also on creating a reliable and organized export system. International buyers need confidence that products will maintain consistent quality, specifications and supply continuity over time.

Despite Iran’s considerable advantages, including access to nearby markets such as Russia, the country’s share of global agricultural trade remains below its actual potential. Diversifying export destinations, developing export protocols and strengthening the role of trade representatives could help Iran establish a more sustainable position in international markets.

Estimates indicate that with structural reforms and the development of necessary infrastructure, Iran’s agricultural sector has the potential to generate around $100 billion in foreign exchange revenues, while achieving $50 billion in agricultural exports could become attainable in the near future.

Transforming Iran’s agriculture from a production-oriented sector into an export-driven industry requires supply-chain reforms, reduced vulnerability to imported inputs, development of export infrastructure and alignment with global standards. Such measures could strengthen the role of agriculture in both the economy and national food security.
