Strategic Feed Reserves at Risk Due to Foreign Exchange Mismanagement

Mr. Davoud Rangi, Member of Iran Feed Grain Importers’ Union

Corn, as one of the main inputs, has very limited reserves. Regarding meal, we only have reserves for about one month to 45 days; an input that constitutes a major part of the needs of livestock and poultry. Barley reserves are also in very poor conditions and the available amount does not meet the market needs. What is now clearly evident is a serious mismatch between production and foreign exchange resources.

He said: “In fact, the main problem began when the parliament, at the suggestion of Planning and Budget Organization, reduced the foreign exchange quota of the Ministry of Agriculture-Jihad, but at the same time the Ministry increased the level of production. These two decisions are in complete contradiction with each other and must be reviewed. When there is not enough foreign exchange to provide inputs, one cannot expect production to continue at the same intensity. The Ministry of Agriculture-Jihad must adjust the level of production to the actual foreign exchange resources, and the parliament must also be accountable for the consequences of its decisions.
