Hidden Costs of Maritime Transport
Dr. Kambiz Etemadi, Member of the Shipping Association
Increased security risks such as piracy, military threats, political tensions and sanctions have caused ship insurance costs to increase by 20-30%. Also, the use of armed security forces, changing sea routes to avoid high-risk areas and delays in transportation increase operating costs by 15-40%. This trend is directly and indirectly transmitted to the final cost of imported goods.
The capacity of the shipping fleet, as a vital vessel in ensuring food security and the national economy, must be able to cope with various shocks and crises. According to the latest statistics, the country’s fleet capacity is about 4.5 million DWT tons, more than 60% of which is used to transport basic goods.
