It depends on the development of an integrated logistics chain, including modern loading and unloading equipment, advanced information systems, efficient transportation networks, and streamlined customs processes. In this regard, upgrading port equipment, strengthening hinterland connections, and ensuring regulatory stability are among the key priorities for improving Iran’s competitiveness in regional trade.

Shahid Rajaee Port once held a significant position among regional container ports during the 1980s and early 1990s, with major international shipping lines operating there. This track record demonstrates Iran’s inherent capacity to become a regional trade hub; however, restoring that position requires overcoming international barriers, attracting investment, and rebuilding confidence among global shipping operators.

Under current conditions, northern ports and alternative trade routes can play an important role in strengthening supply chain resilience. However, due to limitations in port capacity, storage infrastructure, and transport connectivity, they cannot fully replace the role of southern ports in the short term.

The future of Iran’s maritime trade depends on transitioning from traditional ports toward next-generation ports based on technology, integrated logistics and smart connectivity with global transportation networks.
