The fate of Iran’s maritime trade during sanctions
Gholamreza Saba, CEO of Nik Vandad Shipping Company

Sanctions are the most important challenge for shipping in Iran, because currently the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, the largest bulk fleet in the Middle East, is unable to travel to most ports in the world, and this has led to many damages. However, there is a possibility that a way to enter South American ports will be opened.
In Imam Khomeini and Bandar Abbas ports, rail laying has been completed up to the pier, but its capacity is not sufficient. For example, if 30,000 tons of goods are to be imported into Bandar Abbas from CIS countries for transit every month, the capacity of this port to handle this task is 10 to 15 thousand tons.
In the transportation sector, we are also facing the wear and tear of trucks. In addition, the land transportation system in ports is managed by the driver himself and there is no coherent and reliable company for land transportation. Therefore, in this situation, in addition to adding coastal cranes and conveyor belts for unloading bagged cargo in the country’s ports, serious measures should be taken to strengthen the situation of rail and land transportation.
